Dental Erosion Can Be Caused by Acidic Foods

Posted .

Did you know that foods that have a high acidity level can erode your tooth enamel? The reason is due to low pH levels within the foods. One of the biggest offenders of acidic foods is found in sugary sweets, specifically sour sweets. In fact, there are some sour treats that can be purchased today at your local supermarket that is nearly as acidic as car battery acid! If you want to protect your teeth for many years to come, do your part to minimize the effects of acidic foods. Listed below are some common keys to remember:

– The most important thing you can do is prevent acidic foods from entering your mouth in the first place. Avoid foods and drinks with a high acidity.
– If you chose to eat acidic foods, always include them as part of your large meals and never as standalone snacks.
– After eating foods with a low pH level, and always clean and rinse your mouth out with water.
– Avoid toothpaste that could potentially make matters worse. Look for toothpaste that has a low-abrasive fluoride and bicarbonate in it to neutralize the acids.
– When acidic foods interact with teeth, abrasive cleaning tools can damage your enamel. Always use a toothbrush with soft bristles and remember to brush gently.
– Saliva has been proven to wash away harmful bacteria and neutralize acids. Try chewing sugarless gum after meals to stimulate saliva flow.
– Avoid brushing your teeth immediately after eating or drinking acidic foods, as your teeth could be extra sensitive at this time.
